Аннотация: Занимательный анекдот из биографии Адриана, написанный неизвестным автором «Истории Августов», повествует о том, как император идет в общественные бани и встречает ветерана, пережившего тяжелые времена. Из сострадания к старику Адриан дает ему деньги и раба. Во время последующего посещения бань группа стариков пытается воспользоваться его щедростью, но император их перехитрил. Однако демократический образ императора, смешивающегося с простыми людьми в банях, не согласуется с тем, что мы знаем о характере и привычках Адриана. По всей вероятности, история возникла как анекдот не об Адриане, а о Веспасиане, о котором Светоний рассказывает историю, сюжет и структура которой очень напоминают анекдот об Адриане и обездоленном ветеране. Подобным образом автор «Истории Августов» заимствовал материал из «Жизни Тита» Светония, чтобы украсить свой образ
Адриана.

A note on the vita Hadriani in the Historia Augusta

Abstract: An entertaining anecdote in the biography of Hadrian by the pseudonymous author of the Historia Augusta relates how the emperor goes to the public baths and meets a veteran who has fallen on hard times. Out of compassion for the old man, Hadrian grants him money and a slave. During a subsequent visit to the baths, a group of old men attempt to take advantage of his generosity but are outwitted by the emperor. The democratic image of the emperor mingling with the common people in the baths is, however, discordant with what we otherwise know of Hadrian's character and habits. In all probability the story originated not as an anecdote about Hadrian, but about Vespasian, of whom Suetonius tells a story whose plot and structure closely resemble the anecdote of Hadrian and the destitute veteran. In a similar manner, the author-forger of the Historia Augusta has borrowed material from Suetonius' Life of Titus to embellish his image of Hadrian.
