Об употреблении слова maximus в римской литературе (Ter. Adel. 881)

Аннотация: После А. Момильяно в науке утвердилось мнение, что в архаической латыни слово maximus могло обозначать «больший из двух». Это значение оказывается важным для понимания термина praetor maximus, который упоминает только Ливий в 7.3.5. Момильяно и его сторонники в качестве доказательства приводят место из «Братьев» Теренция (881), где один из братьев называет себя natu maxumus. В статье приводятся аргументы, что такое понимание пассажа из «Братьев» является неверным. Однако понимание maximus как «старший из двух» можно найти в другом месте у самого Ливия (1.3.9–10)

Abstract: After А. Momigliano the opinion was firmly established that in archaic Latin the word maximus cold mean "the elder of the two". This meaning is important for the understanding the term praetor maximus, which only Livy mentions in 7.3.5. Momigliano and his supporters cite as the evidence line 881 from Terence's Brothers, where one of the brothers calls himself natu maxumus. The author of the article argues that such an understanding of the passage is incorrect. However, understanding maximus as "the elder of two" can be found elsewhere in Livy himself.
