“Ils n’ont rien appris, ni rien oublié”: Athenian democracy and its leaders between two oligarchic revolutions (410–404 B.C.)Abstract: After the establishment (conditioned by a profound internal crisis) in Athens in 411 of the oligarchic regime of Four Hundred and its subsequent liquidation, the leaders of democrats who came back to power learned, as it seems, no lesson from their first defeat. Not the slightest attempt was made to improve in any way the image of the degraded democracy (which, accordingly, lasted only six years till its next fall) in the eyes of hesitating citizens; domination of demagogues and constant violations of law returned. The article offers a hypothetical answer to the question on the causes such reluctance to acknowledge own mistakes.
Keywords: Classical Greece, Athens, democracy, oligarchy, Peloponnesian War, demagogues, Cleophon, Alcibiades, Theramenes
