'Live for ever – learn for ever' (For the centennial anniversary of Aza Takho-Godi)

Abstract: At the beginning of the article, the understanding of the proverb «Live forever – learn forever» is justified not only in the sense of «it's never too late to learn something new», but also in the sense that Seneca proposed in «Moral Letters to Lucilius»: «learn how to live forever». The article shows that Aza Alibekovna Takho-Godi, with her life – a century long – managed to embody both of these meanings. She is a well-known classical philologist in Russia and abroad, translator, Doctor of Philology, Distinguished Professor by Moscow State University, Chairperson of the cultural and educational society «Losev Debates». She was awarded the title of Honored Scholar of the Russian Federation and Honored Scholar of the Republic of Dagestan. She received the Silver Medal of the Institute of Philosophy of the Russian Academy of Sciences «For Contributions to Philosophy» and the Order of Venerable Euphrosyne, Grand Princess of Moscow, 1st Degree from the Russian Orthodox Church. She was awarded the Diploma of Honor of the President of the Russian Federation. All her life she learned and also taught her students, as we know from her books: «Losev» – about her Teacher, and from her Memoirs – «Life and Destiny». Aza Alibekovna graduated from the Faculty of Philology and started her postgraduate studies in Classical Philology of the Moscow State Pedagogical Institute. Professor A.F. Losev became her thesis supervisor. She became an assistant and a close person for Alexey Fedorovich
and his wife, Valentina Mikhailovna, after whose death she became the scientist's
life partner, the keeper and publisher of his legacy. To date, Aza Alibekovna teaches at the Faculty of Philology of Moscow State University, and from 1962 to 1996 she headed the Department of Classical Philology here, since 1977 she has chaired the Special Council of Ph.D. Examiners (Classical Philology).
