Abstract: The work publishes a first Russian translation of two speeches by the ancient Greek orator and the great representative of the Second Sophistic Aelius Aristides (117–180 AD): "To those who criticize him because he does not declaim" and "Against those who burlesque the Mysteries (of Oratory)". The translation is made according to the edition: Aelius Aristides: Quae supersunt omnia. Ed. B. Keil. Vol. 2. Berlin, 1898. P. 227–236; 237–252 and provided with a historical, cultural and linguistic commentary.
